Maumee OH is a small town with a growing commercial center, including Arrowhead Business Park. The proximity of Toledo makes this one of the most popular suburbs in northwest Ohio.
The city is located along the Maumee River and offers a wide range of activities. This community has something for everyone, from the annual Walleye Run at Side Cut Metropark to the historic battle of Fallen Timbers.
Shops at Fallen Timbers
Shops at Fallen Timbers is a premium outdoor shopping center that has something for everyone. The shopping center has clothing, beauty, and home decor stores as well as restaurants.
A popular destination for family outings, the mall is also very busy. On a recent 50-degree afternoon, the walkways were not crowded and mothers and daughters moseyed through the shops, many of which were advertising sales.
One of the more popular stores is the Real Seafood Company, which serves seafood from all over the country. The restaurant, located at Toledo’s docks, offers premium wines that go with the steaks. These include Kobe A5 Striploins and Dry Aged NY Strips.
The Shops at Fallen Timbers have recently lost a few stores, including Regis Salon and Charming Charlie’s, but overall the mall is doing well. New tenants are attracting customers and increasing revenue. Beer Barrel Pizza & Grill, and Jed’s American Grill are doing well.
Side Cut Metropark
A great place to bring kids or friends, this local attraction is a fun way to spend an afternoon. The words “I’m bored!” won’t be heard here. There are outdoor and indoor swimming pools, a play area, hiking trails in Silver Lake, kayaking on the lake, and much more.
Get a taste of NW Ohio history on the Water Trail at Side Cut Metropark, where the remains of three original canal locks are preserved and a replica of a historic canal boat can be seen in action. You can also explore the history of this region at other Metroparks Toledo locations, including the Isaac Ludwig Mill at Providence and the 1938 historic Manor House at Wildwood.
The newest park in the area, Glass City, offers multiple playgrounds, splashpad, events spaces and The Ribbon, a paved multi-use loop opened for skating in the winter and used for walking, roller skates or scooters during the summer. You won’t be able to resist this park, which has been featured in national publications.
Farnsworth Metropark
Located in Waterville, this long narrow park overlooks the Maumee River with a view of Missionary, Butler and Indian islands. The park sits at one end of the Towpath Trail, which runs alongside the Maumee River and forms part of the blue-blazed Buckeye Trail system. From Farnsworth, the trail continues east to Providence and Bend View Metroparks.
Bike the Maumee River Water Trail: This scenic trail connects five Toledo Metroparks including Bend View, Providence, Oak Openings, Farnsworth and Secor. It is perfect for cyclists of all skill levels, including families with children.
Kayak the Maumee River: This scenic activity is a great way to experience local river wildlife and beautiful waterfront views. Try a guided tour or a 90-minute glow paddle. Explore the island and Roche de Bout, a protruding rock that was a landmark for Native people and early explorers. Leaders of the Miami, Shawnee and Lenape tribes held meetings on this rock, including one before the 1794 Battle of Fallen Timbers.
Wolcott House Heritage Complex
Maumee Valley Historical Society is based at the Wolcott House Heritage Complex. The mission of the society is to collect and preserve history in northwest Ohio, as well as study it, and share that knowledge. The museum complex includes two houses, a cabin, a railroad depot, and a church. All of these are furnished in a way that gives visitors a look at pioneer life.
The complex is named after James Wolcott who moved to Maumee, Ohio in 1818. He was an entrepreneur who built wharves warehouses and steamships along the Maumee River. The Wolcott House is a Federal/Classic Revival mansion that overlooks the Maumee River and was built between 1827 and 1836.
